Walcrest Project Update – December 2021
The last phase of the Walcrest Project is progressing with installation of final landscaping.
Retaining walls – shown in the image above – have been placed and sidewalks have been poured along Walnut Hill Lane and Hillcrest Road. In January 2022, ornamental fencing will be added around the perimeter. In the first quarter of 2022, planting activities will bring seasonal trees, shrubbery, grass and other landscaping elements onto the site.
Weather permitting, we anticipate completion of these initiatives and all aspects of the Walcrest Project to be finalized by this Spring.
To stay update-to-date on final activities of the Walcrest Project, please continue following us on the project’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

September 2021
Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) is pleased to announce the completion of the Walcrest Pump Station and Reservoir Project. The completed pump station has successfully passed all equipment and system testing. The upgraded pump station is now part of the water production system that provides safe drinking water to DWU’s customers.
Currently, the landscaping contractor is in the final phases of landscaping improvements that are scheduled for completion by Spring 2022, weather permitting. The public is advised that during landscaping improvement work, it may be necessary to continue with lane closures on Walnut Hill Lane and/or Hillcrest Road for the safety of motorists and workers. All aspects of this work are being supervised by a DWU inspector. To stay update-to-date on lane closures, please follow us on the project’s social media platforms on Facebook and Twitter. The latest project information can also be found on the project website.

August 2020
Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) is pleased to announce an accelerated schedule for the Walcrest Pump Station & Reservoir project, in spite of COVID-19 and unrelated contractor delays. Heavy construction at the site is winding down, and the new pump station has been operating successfully since December 2019. As we shift our focus from construction to landscaping, we’d like to thank our neighbors for your patience and input throughout this process. Walcrest is one of the largest redevelopment projects in the history of DWU and serves a critical role in the community. Our expectation is that the nearly completed facility will dependably serve Dallas residents for decades to come.
The updated timeline of major project milestones is as follows:
August 2020 – Bid landscaping
Winter 2020-2021 – Construction completed
Spring 2021 – Landscaping begins
Fall 2021 – Landscaping completed
Please note: Traffic controls are expected to remain in place for the project’s duration. To view Walcrest’s current traffic control plan, click here. (8/14/20)
February 2020
DWU is excited to announce that, after a brief delay due to performance issues, the contractor has resumed construction on the Walcrest Pump Station & Reservoir. Heavy construction has also recommenced, including concrete work around the pump station. As such, traffic controls have been reinstated, indefinitely closing the right lane of northbound Hillcrest Road, from Walnut Hill Lane to Aberdeen Avenue, each weekday. This closure is a required safety precaution to protect passing traffic and pedestrians from heavy construction equipment entering and leaving the site. The updated traffic control plan can be viewed below. (2/4/20)
In addition, we’re pleased to report that the new pump station is up and running as of December 2019. Dallas Water Utilities will decommission and turn over the original pump station (pictured below) to the contractor for demolition in the coming weeks so construction on the second water storage reservoir can proceed. (2/4/20)
January 2020
- Neighbors, please be aware that the right lane of northbound Hillcrest Road from Walnut Hill Lane to Aberdeen Avenue will be closed for two weeks, beginning today, for underground utility work. Please drive courteously and obey all traffic controls. (1/13/20)
September 2019
Please be advised that the Walcrest Pump Station and Reservoir project is delayed. The approximate timeline is as follows:
Fall 2021 – Complete construction
Winter/Spring 2021 – Bid landscaping
Spring 2022 – Complete landscaping
Please note, these dates are subject to change.
Our expectation is that the Walcrest facility, when completed to DWU’s standards, will dependably serve Dallas residents for decades to come. We will continue to keep you updated through our project website and social media channels as the contractor and their team take the steps needed to allow us to accept their work on behalf of you, our customers.

August 2019
- At Walcrest, we’re proud to be part of a community that values opportunities to learn and grow. Last week, a group of citizens and interns from DWU and the project’s contractor got a behind-the-scenes tour of the Walcrest Pump Station and Reservoir to learn more about the facility and the inner workings of municipal engineering projects. We had a blast showing them around! (8/9/2019)
June 2019
- At the end of June, roadwork will begin along Aberdeen Avenue and Airline Road, causing traffic to be narrowed to a one-lane, two-way road with sidewalk closures. A majority of the work will take place on Aberdeen Avenue, but some areas of Airline Road near the intersection will also be affected. Please drive courteously and follow all traffic controls. (6/24/19)

If you are traveling this holiday season, be safe and enjoy quality time with your loved ones. (11/20/18)
- According to experts, this month has been the wettest October in Dallas since 1981 – our city has accumulated 14.51” of rain, breaking the 1981 record of 14.18”. The Walcrest team wants to thank our neighbors for your continued patience during construction as we work hard to keep the site clean and mud-free. (11/7/18)
October 2018
- The rain has been falling hard this month in North Texas – in the past three weeks, it has rained more than nine inches in Dallas alone. Although the weather patterns have been irregular recently, the Walcrest construction team has continued to work hard, using the rainy days to focus on the interior portion of the pump station. Check out the photo below to see the most recent progress. (10/19/18)
- An important focus of the Walcrest Pump Station & Reservoir project is to correct hydraulic inefficiencies experienced at the original facility. Upon project completion, the new Walcrest pumps, which are being installed in the below photo, will operate approximately 30 percent more efficiently than the original ones, meaning less energy will be used to pump the same amount of water. (10/10/18)
September 2018
- The Walcrest team and Dallas Water Utilities would like to thank our neighbors for your continued patience throughout this construction process for a project that, once completed, will benefit our community in numerous ways. As a reminder for those unfamiliar with the background of the Walcrest Pump Station & Reservoir, this current overhaul of the original facility (which has been in service since 1956!) will bring Walcrest back into compliance with all city codes and regulations, as well as ensure that the pump station and reservoir will continue to safely and efficiently serve the Dallas community for decades to come. (9/28/18)
Then and now: As you can see, much progress has been made on the Walcrest Pump Station and Reservoir since construction began in 2015. The original facility (pictured left) has been in service since 1956, but upgrades currently being implemented (pictured right) will ensure that Walcrest can continue to effectively serve generations of Dallas residents to come!
- The Walcrest team is excited to share a sneak peek from inside the pump station, where the construction team has made major progress on piping installation. The pipes, shown in the images below, will eventually be responsible for pumping potable water from the Walcrest reservoir throughout Dallas. (9/14/18)

August 2018
- Thank you to our neighbors who have expressed concern about the trees near Walcrest. Throughout construction, the Walcrest team has done everything possible to maintain and protect the foliage surrounding the Walcrest site. To ensure their preservation, an arborist visits the site regularly to inspect the trees’ condition. His last visit confirmed that all trees near Walcrest are healthy and that their growth will remain sustainable through the remainder of construction activities. The Walcrest team will continue to communicate with this expert for further recommendations on best practices for maintaining and preserving these trees so they can be enjoyed by Dallas residents for decades to come. (8/20/18)
- Dallas Water Utilities thanks our neighbors and all Dallas residents for their continued patience during the recent construction on Hillcrest Road to install several underground valves. We are excited to announce that this process is complete, and all major traffic controls have been lifted from the area. The Walcrest project will now resume its regular, city-approved traffic control plan, which includes the closure of the right lane on northbound Hillcrest near the entrance to the construction site.
